Support for vision-related difficulties that follow stroke, brain injury and other neurological conditions, delivered privately at home by a therapist trained in neuro-vision retraining.
After a stroke, concussion or other neurological event, a person may have perfectly good eyesight and still struggle to use it. Reading may feel tiring, a crowded store may feel overwhelming, or the person may bump into things on one side. These are examples of vision-related difficulties that can follow neurological changes, and they can quietly limit independence even when other recovery is going well.
Karina Fakheri, MS, OTR/L is trained in neuro-vision retraining and has more than 15 years of experience in neurological rehabilitation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. In her practice, vision is part of the larger picture of how you function at home.
Karina begins by listening to what you notice and by observing how you do everyday tasks. Questions she may explore include:
Based on what she finds, activities and strategies may be added to your plan, and the home environment can be adjusted, for example through lighting and clutter. Karina is an occupational therapist, not an eye doctor. Eye health, prescriptions and medical diagnoses remain with your ophthalmologist, optometrist and physician, and she encourages you to keep those appointments.
Neuro-vision retraining usually does not stand alone. It often supports stroke recovery, and it intersects with safety at home, which is why many clients also look at fall prevention and home safety. You can read more about the recovery process in our article on stroke recovery at home with occupational therapy.
Outcomes vary, and no result can be promised. A clear evaluation and realistic goals are the starting point.
The first step is a phone consultation, which is complimentary and confidential. Karina asks about your history, your goals and your home, and explains how an in-home plan could work. If you decide to go ahead, the first visit includes an evaluation, and the plan that follows is shaped by what she finds and by your physician's guidance.
Visits are available in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Holmby Hills, West Hollywood, Hancock Park, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Studio City and greater Los Angeles.

No. An eye exam checks eye health and prescriptions. Neuro-vision retraining in occupational therapy looks at how vision-related difficulties affect daily activities. Keep your eye doctor appointments.
