Fall prevention, home safety and aging in place

A private occupational therapist looks at your home and your daily routines together to reduce fall risk and help you stay independent where you want to live.

Why an occupational therapist looks at the home

Falls rarely have a single cause. Balance, strength, vision, medication, footwear, lighting and the layout of a home can all play a part. An occupational therapist is trained to look at the whole picture: the person, the activities they do and the environment where they do them. That is why a home visit can reveal what an office visit cannot.

Karina Fakheri, MS, OTR/L brings more than 15 years of neurological rehabilitation experience from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to home safety evaluations. In Los Angeles, homes vary from hillside estates with many stairs to condominiums with narrow bathrooms, so recommendations are tailored to the house you actually live in.

What a home safety evaluation may cover

Karina also looks at the person: balance, strength, endurance, vision and confidence, and the fear of falling that can lead people to move less. Where appropriate, she builds a program of practical exercises and routines.

Planning to age in place

Aging in place means staying in your own home safely as your needs change. It is easier to plan before a crisis than after one. Karina can help you and your family think through which changes matter first, and which can wait. For a room-by-room starting point, read Preventing Falls at Home: A Room-by-Room Guide.

Fall risk also connects with other conditions we address, including Parkinson's disease, stroke recovery and post-surgical recovery.

What to expect from a first conversation

The first step is a phone consultation, which is complimentary and confidential. Karina asks about your history, your goals and your home, and explains how an in-home plan could work. If you decide to go ahead, the first visit includes an evaluation, and the plan that follows is shaped by what she finds and by your physician's guidance.

Where Karina travels

Karina visits homes in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Holmby Hills, West Hollywood, Hancock Park, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Studio City and greater Los Angeles.

This page offers general educational information, not medical advice. Please talk with your physician about your own health, and about anything that worries you.
